Just A Little Something To Think About
by Christine Upton

I have spent so much time trying to teach my children the right way to do things. I honestly felt that I was doing my best to teach them respect for others, to know the difference between right and wrong, and to know the love of the Lord. Then one day, I got a ‘wake up call’.

Have you ever heard the saying “walking the walk, and not just talking the talk”? Or how about this one ... “Do as I say & not as I do”? If you are not too sure as to where I am going with this, please bare with me, because I do have a point.

You see, while waiting for a parking shuttle at one of the hospitals down town, my youngest son was watching an elderly woman across the street who was making her way towards a curb with a walker. He stated, with a deep look of concern, "Mommy, that maw-maw has a boo-boo." I nodded and tried to explain to him that she needed the walker to help her get around easier, because we all need a little help from time to time. After a few minutes had passed by, he grabbed my hand and asked, "Mommy, where’s the paw-paw?" Well, before I could say anything, a man had pulled up to the curb. The woman did her best to open the door & put her walker in the back seat. She then slowly got into the passenger side of the car. As I stood there watching, it was then, when my son began yelling across at the person in the driver's seat. "Man, you help that maw-maw! You need to open door for lady!" He was very upset over the fact that this stranger, this "maw-maw", was in obvious pain and this man (nor anyone for that matter) had offered to help her. It was then that I almost found myself to be embarrassed. I grasped his hand and I told him to stop yelling. He then looked at me with his big blue eyes and said “I’m sorry mommy”.

My son was very quiet on the shuttle ride back, and after we got to our own car, it was then that I realized that I should not have been embarrassed by my child's comments. If anything, I should have embarrassed about my not offering to help the woman. I found myself asking my son to forgive me, because he was actually in the right, and it was I who was in the wrong.

I learned something that day, and I hope that everyone around us heard what my 3 & 1/2 year old son had to say that day on behalf of the "maw-maw' and the "lady" who just needed a little help, because I sure did!
